click on photos for larger views: [gallery] You'd think it wouldn't be possible to learn more about Da Vinci, science majors cover him well. But I discovered a sketch of his at the show I'd never seen before, it was totally surreal and Dali like. I'll have to look it up. It's the sketch in the photo gallery here. The exhibit was mostly smaller working models of several of his inventions and I had a really hard time not taking them all apart, putting them back together and playing with them all. A good, not a great show, worth seeing if you are going to be a the museum, probably not worth a trip on its own. Da… Read More

Huntsville State Park

yellow bellied water snake Today we went to the Huntsville State Park. There are several trails, we walked about 4 miles and covered less than a third of them. It was dry there too, every thing is so dry this year. So we didn't see any alligators or water birds. There were lots of ravens and the usual woodland birds. We weren't sure about the snake till we… Read More

Big Thicket National Preserve

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008
Today I wandered down to the Big Thicket National Preserve I heard they had some batches of wild carnivorous plants growing there. The preserve is so large (90,000 acres ) that the trail for the pitcher plants is several miles down the highway from the office as is the sundew trail which is about half way between them. I drove down to the pitcher plant trail first. It is off 4850 which is off 1943 off of 69/287 in Warren Texas. The last part of the drive is on a loosely packed sandy road for a few miles. I was glad I traded the Lincoln for the suv thingy. I'm sure the Lincoln would've gotten stuck. I was… Read More

The Houston Rodeo is in town

Saturday, March 15th, 2008
We try to get to the rodeo every other year or so. It is a lot of fun to go watch cattle roping and cattle round ups. The most fun to watch is the calf scramble. Half as many calfs as children are released and they compete to catch, rope and then drag the calf back to the square. The calfs are usually not to keen on being dragged back into the middle of the arena. We saw John Foggerty perform the night we went. Skip it if you have a chance to go hear him. He didn't interact with the audience or get any momentum going. It wasn't much different then playing a cd. [gallery] Read More
