Tokyo day 1
- View from hotel room at The New Otani
- Toilet control panel
The 13 hour flight in the cattle section wasn’t too bad because it wasn’t very crowded, concerned about all the sick people on the plane, hope I didn’t catch anything.
The cab ride was like something from a movie, fast, in and out of traffic, several cars we cleared with only inches to spare. And it’s a very long ride from the airport ~ 50 Km. All the cabs here have lace covering the tops of the seats, just like your grandmother’s home had on her chairs and couches.
Many of the concrete barrier walls along the highway have overhangs at the top for a couple of feet. Not sure why, perhaps it makes a better sound barrier?
All the trees are bonsai’d along the highway. They look like the crape myrtles back home only pruned with a little more skill, but not much.
Another odd thing is about three quarters of the apartment balconies have laundry hanging out to dry. People don’t use clothes dryers here?
The hotel, despite being pricey does not have wireless access, and only one ethernet cable. The room key is a key, not a key card. I’d expected Tokyo to be more hi-tech. Perhaps we’re in an older part of the city?
But despite everything else being lo-tech the toilet is high tech, heated seat and its very own control panel.
Tokyo looks and feels very much like NYC so far, lots of tall buildings, parks and pedestrians. It’s so nice to be in a real city again.
Pictures and more details to follow, we’ll be here a week.
