We went down to South Padre Island for a few days. It’s a barrier island and about as far south as you can go in Texas and still be in Texas. There are three national wildlife refuges down there, we visited two of them and went into Mexico to a few border towns.

The island itself is deserted once you get away from the strip and there is a wildlife trail ( boardwalk ) on the island that is full of critters. Most of the island is beach and sand dunes. The hotel strip is quite tiny with little on it besides hotels and stores full of tourist junk. We were surprised at how few restaurants there were and forget finding coffee on the island.

Towards the end of the developed part of the island is a future world birding center and a boardwalk trail through a small wildlife sanctuary. It doesn’t look like much but we saw alligators, sea turtles, small sharks, and all kinds of birds along the trail.

It’s a nice area, much drier than I had expected. I thought the climate would be more tropical down there.
