We took a ride down to Smith Point and Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge this past weekend.

Anahuac Park is huge, it is several miles across in each direction. And it is so flat. The pictures fail to convey how strange it feels. When you are in the park you can look 360′ and see flat marsh and fields for miles. It is so quiet and feels so lonely out there. It is a park you want to visit on an overcast fall day. Trees are rare and I think you’d bake if you visited during the summer.

We had a great time finding and photographing alligators. At one point a truck full of young Mexican men went by and I heard ‘loco’. No one has called me that since I lived in the DFW area 25 years ago. The young Mexican men referred to me as loco then also. Guess us Boston lasses are a bit too much for them to take? Or perhaps the locals have more sense than to go out in the grass stalking alligators?

It never fails to amaze me how much coastline down here is sparsely populated. Smith Point is very sparse on people. There were a few grocery stores run out of small shacks along the main road. Many more hawks could be seen than people. They were hunting in the pastures and hanging out on the electric line poles watching for prey.

There was a steady stream of odd looking fishing boats going by as we checked out the coast.

One of the things I enjoy the most about photography is macro shots. It is like having a magnifying glass with you. I can take zoomed in close ups of things and see details I’d never otherwise be able to view. There’s no way I’d put myself that close to this guy. S/he’s probably harmless but comes in at about 2.5″ long not counting the legs.

These spiders were everywhere last August.
