Alligator hunting in the Texas swamplands

August 8th, 2007 · No Comments

Some of the children descended upon us this weekend. I logged on line to see if the plane was delayed about an hour before it was supposed to land and Continental said they landed. Eek! Out the door and off to the airport. Because if you are five minutes late picking up the children they think you forgot them, ten minutes and they are sure you died in a car wreck, fifteen minutes late and they are wondering how soon they can collect their inheritance and how much will it be.

For entertainment today we dragged the children off to a swamp to go alligator hunting at Brazos Bend Park. I almost tripped over this alligator. Then he was kind enough to let me take about a dozen pictures of him? her? and only hissed a little at me. He didn’t seem that big when I was taking the pictures. In retrospect sorting through the pictures he was quite large and warning me off rather aggressively. It would seem I still have more brawn than brains.

We had a great time finding and photographing alligators, strange birds, and really big frogs. I can’t wait to go back. The children were bored to tears and spent the day wondering what they had done in a previous life to be stuck with two crackpots who’d drag them into an alligator filled swamp in Texas in August.
