Nuke the sponge to kill the germs
UF Researchers find microwaving sponges sterilizes them
This kills E.coli, samonella and most other household bugs. Bacillus cereus spore need 4 minutes to kill. It is the heat of the microwave not the radiation that kills the bugs so be sure the sponges are very wet. Also soaking the sponge helps prevent it from catching on fire while in the microwave being zapped. Make sure there is no metallic content in the sponge and don’t burn your self when you remove the sponge.
Putting sponges through the dishwasher when you run the days dishes will help keep it clean between zappings. Also standing it on its end or in a holder in the sink allows it to dry between uses which will also help prevent bacteria from growing in the sponge.
