Fluorescent lighting

January 20th, 2007 · No Comments

I can’t say enough good things about these lights. Many years ago we had an old, dark victorian home in New England. I switched all the lights to fluorescent and our electric bill dropped by a third.

Down here deep in the south west those fluorescent lights now give us the added benefit of not adding heat to the house. ( 25 incandescent 60 watt bulbs is the equivalent of a 1500 watt space heater running on high in your home )

A typical incandescent light uses 60 or 75 watts of electricity, a typical fluorescent uses 13 watts. So for each hour of use the fluorescent bulb saves you 47 watts at an average electric rate of .15/kilowatt or .00705 cents. Doesn’t sound like much but lets assume you use this particular light 8 hours a day, 365 days a year. That is $20.59 for each light switched.

The victorian had 25 lights, this south western home has 34 lights. All are not used 8 hours a day, some more some less but the fluorescent lights save a several hundred dollars off the bill each year.

Some of the ceilings here are 18′ and they have recessed lights. Fluorescents last about 5 years as opposed to about 6 months. That means many less ladder rentals and days spent changing hard to reach light bulbs.

Some people worry about the color of the light. Fluorescents now throw a very similar colored light to incandescents. And your house plants will like the fluorescent lights much better. Some of mine thrive just on table lamp light now.

Some people don’t like the look of the light bulbs. Almost all of mine are covered by the usual light coverings. But consider also a hundred year old light design no longer belongs in my twenty year old home.
