From Rolling Stone,
Boss Hog…America’s top pork producer churns out a sea of waste that has destroyed rivers, killed millions of fish and generated one of the largest fines in EPA history. Welcome to the dark side of the other white meat…..
Rolling Stone goes on for five pages to tell the tale of Smithfield Foods dumping tons of toxic waste into North Carolinia rivers and fields.
Industrial agriculture is not new, we’ve been slowly progressing in that direction since farming began. It is one reason we can feed so many people so cheaply now.
But lately we’ve been seeing more of the costs, ‘A Sane System Wouldn’t have Mad Cows. Nor would it have Chron’s Disease.
So can we go back to family farms? Not likely, not enough people who’d choose to live that way and most of couldn’t afford to eat if we did go back to that. What we need to do is clean up the factory farm. We need better environmental and human health protections put in place and enforced. For now all we can do is vote with our wallets, buy organic when practical and eat more vegetables.
