Into Houston

July 31st, 2006 · No Comments

We went down into Houston Proper today. It’s been way too little I’ve been in the city since we moved here. Unfortunately it’s not a 15 minute jump like before, more like 60 minutes. The museums are all closed on Monday and Tuesday ( boo — hiss ) but we explored a bit around Rice, the edges of River Oaks, The Skyscraper District and Buffalo Bayou.

Rice has much of the same stuff for stores and restaurants about it that most schools do but no people. We were about the only pedestrians there except for an unusually large number of young pregnant women. We then found where River Oaks is, but there is of course no place to park. We’ll have to go back again with bicycles and scout out the gorgeous homes. We wandered along Westhiemer and looked in a few stores, then wandered along Buffalo Bayou. There are walking trails and all but no place to dump the car and get out and enjoy them. I’ll have to hunt around online for some more information on that. We then went downtown to the Skyscraper district. There is a neat park, Tranquility there.

The oddest thing about being in and about the city proper is the lack of people. There are no pedestrians in the city. It is like walking through a ghost town. So I didn’t totally get my city fix.
