Houston MFA

Finally had a chance to visit the local MFA. Houston Museum of Fine Arts It was not bad all in all, with lots of European painting pre 1900s. There were some interesting sketches by Dali and Picasso hidden in the photography section. A few older Picassos, Mondrians, Matisses, a Kadinsky, and a newly acquired Rembrandt broke things up. There were also quite a few Remingtons who I had not seen before. The museum is split into two buildings. A tunnel between the two has a black floor and walls of blue light that give you the feeling like you have walking in a fog, that everything goes on forever and no where beyond your field of vision. It is almost like being in some kind of a time warp. The second building had a large international collection of jewelry, small statues and fabrics. It was the largest collection of African art I’ve seen, however it consisted only of gold jewelry and other decorative gold pieces.

Most interesting was a temporary exhibition by Thornton Dial. I was very disappointed not to be able to take pictures. It is also difficult to find them on the web. His paintings were good, but his sculptures were amazing. Formed from scrap iron, toys and other miscellany they are intense.

Lost Farm, Thornton Dial
